ESOL Cafe: A New Life Starts with a Cup of Coffee

Can a cup of coffee changes one’s life? Can an ESOL course bring new opportunities for a new immigrant? Yes, they can! This is the the third year of our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program. For many newcomers in the U.S., ESOL course can be a burden. They need to come at least twice a week, leave their children at daycare, learn new things just in the classroom, and try to follow the American way of life. But our ESOL Cafe has offered different approach. We teach English through conversation and coffee. The participants can bring their babies too!

Through our ESOL Cafe, strangers have become friends going out to explore the city together. Newcomers have found jobs from their classmates, others have gained confidence and pursued better job opportunities that require them to speak in English that were not attainable before. Many of our students who are parents have expressed an increased in not only confidence in daily activities but also the ability to connect better with their children.

Our Fall ESOL Cafe are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm and Thursday mornings from 10:00am-12:00pm. This semester we have 15 students that participate weekly. Some topics covered in addition to grammar are conversation and vocabularies for going to the doctor, immigration rights, parenting and some content in social justice issues. We also have some of our advanced students participating in City Wide Adult Literacy Program such as Edible Alphabet at the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Our classes are practical to allow flexibility for both adult learners and instructors. The best way to gain more confidence in speaking English is by practicing and speaking. Is there a better way to learn than among friends than over food and coffee( or tea if you prefer)?

If you are interested, feel free to drop in and take a diagnostic test. There are 6 classes left till the end of the semester. You can also register to be added to our list for the Spring semester 2018!
