As 2025 unfolds, two devastating fires on opposite sides of the world highlight humanity’s ongoing vulnerability to natural disasters. Two major fires in different parts of the world—California, United States, and Kemayoran, Indonesia—not only brought devastation but also underscored the need for preparedness and global solidarity in the face of disasters. While California faced one of the most severe wildfires in its history, the densely populated neighborhood of Kemayoran in Jakarta was engulfed in flames. These incidents highlight the crucial role of disaster mitigation and collective response.

Wildfires in California

The wildfires in California in January 2025, known as the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, consumed more than 37,000 hectares of land (source: California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, 2025). According to a report from the Los Angeles Times (2025), 28 lives were lost, and 16,000 buildings were destroyed. The disaster also had a significant environmental impact, displacing thousands of wildlife species and severely degrading air quality across the Los Angeles region.

The Kemayoran Fire

Meanwhile, a devastating fire swept through the densely populated neighborhood of Kemayoran, Jakarta, as reported by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) in its official statement (2025). Data from the Jakarta Fire Department (2025) revealed that more than 100 homes were destroyed, forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate, many with only the belongings they could carry.

Unsafe electrical installations and limited access to firefighting equipment were identified as the primary causes of the fire, according to an investigation by the Jakarta Fire Department, which found that electrical short circuits account for over 70% of fires in high-density residential areas. This incident underscores the pressing challenge of ensuring safety in overcrowded urban environments.

The Islamic Perspective on Disasters

Islam views disasters as both a test and a reminder for humanity. In the Qur’an, Allah SWT states:

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْخَوْفِ وَٱلْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ وَٱلْأَنفُسِ وَٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” (Qur’an 2:155)

Disasters encourage people to strengthen their faith, practice self-reflection, and foster solidarity with one another. In California, thousands of volunteers from various states assisted in firefighting efforts and relief distribution for victims. Similarly, in Kemayoran, local residents came together to provide food and temporary shelter for those affected. Such acts of solidarity reflect the importance of faith and humanitarian aid in times of crisis.

Mitigation Measures: Reducing Risks and Losses

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), effective disaster mitigation is crucial in reducing risks and minimizing losses. Similarly, Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) emphasizes the need for early preparedness to prevent large-scale disasters.

Disaster mitigation is a critical step in minimizing the impact of fires and other catastrophes. It not only aims to reduce material losses but also to save lives and ensure the sustainability of communities and the environment. Therefore, it is essential for individuals and communities to adopt practical mitigation strategies in their daily lives.

Here are some key measures:

Education and Training:

  • Understand the fire risks in your area.
  • Participate in emergency response and firefighting training.

Home Safety:

  • Regularly inspect electrical installations.
  • Keep fire extinguishers at home and learn how to use them.

Evacuation Planning:

  • Establish clear evacuation routes at home and within the community.
  • Ensure all family members understand emergency procedures.

Community Strengthening:

  • Form local disaster response teams.
  • Mobilize resources to support prevention and emergency response efforts.

Spiritual Reflection and Gratitude:

  • Continuously seek protection from Allah SWT.
  • Express gratitude for safety and extend help to those in need.

The fires in California and Kemayoran serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of preparedness, both at an individual and community level. These tragedies also highlight the fragility of human life in the face of natural forces. However, through strategic planning, solidarity, and faith, we can navigate challenges with resilience and strength.

May these incidents serve as valuable lessons and inspire concrete steps toward disaster prevention in the future. May the affected communities find strength in recovery. Ameen.
