Every year during Eid al-Adha, Muslims around the world engage in the noble act of Qurban; sacrificing livestock to honor the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim and share the blessings of meat with those in need. Since 1994, Dompet Dhuafa has been committed to this mission through its flagship program Tebar Hewan Kurban (Qurbani Giving), ensuring that Qurban is not only a ritual but also a means of social empowerment and food equity.

The Origins of Tebar Hewan Kurban (Qurbani Giving)

Dompet Dhuafa initiated the Qurbani Giving program in 1994 with a vision to reach underserved communities across the archipelago. What started as a campaign to distribute 999 animals has grown into a nationwide movement that empowers local farmers and delivers high-quality Qurban meat to remote and impoverished areas of Indonesia.

Introducing DD Farm: A Hub for Sustainable Livestock

To support this large-scale distribution, Dompet Dhuafa established DD Farm, a centralized and community-based livestock hub. DD Farm was designed to provide a modern, sustainable model for Qurban livestock management.

Key features of DD Farm include:

  • Feed Efficiency: Using fermented dry feed to ensure consistent animal growth and nutritional intake.
  • Local Empowerment: Involving trained local farmers in livestock care and farm operations.
  • Scalability: Designed to house over a thousand goats and sheep, with room for future expansion.

DD Farm is not just a place for raising animals; it is a training and education center for local farmers, helping them to improve their skills, increase income, and participate in a more equitable livestock economy.

How Livestock Are Selected for Qurban

Ensuring the quality and compliance of Qurban livestock is a central priority of the program. Dompet Dhuafa follows strict religious and health guidelines to select animals, both at DD Farm and among its partner farmers across Indonesia.

Selection Criteria

  • Weight Classifications:
  1. Standard: 23–25 kg
  2. Medium (Deluxe): 26–28 kg
  3. Premium: 29–31 kg
  4. Super Premium: 32–34 kg
  • Health Checks: Animals undergo daily health monitoring and periodic veterinary inspections to ensure they are disease-free and physically sound.
  • Religious Compliance: All animals must meet the Islamic requirements for Qurban, including age, species, and overall condition.

Dompet Dhuafa collaborates with local livestock agencies and veterinarians to carry out these assessments before animals are approved for the Qurban program.

Quality Control and Monitoring

The process doesn’t stop at selection. A comprehensive Quality Control (QC) system ensures that only eligible animals are processed and distributed.

  • Routine Monitoring: Ongoing health checks and feed evaluations.
  • Pen Inspection: Cleanliness, space, and environmental standards are monitored at every partner farm.
  • Pre-Distribution Audit: Final checks are conducted days before Eid al-Adha to confirm the animals meet all standards.

A Monitoring & Evaluation team documents and evaluates each step of the process, providing transparent reporting to donors and ensuring continuous improvement across the network.

Distribution to Communities in Need

Once the Qurban animals are slaughtered, the meat is carefully packaged—fresh or frozen—and distributed by trained field teams to communities in remote, impoverished, or disaster-affected areas.

Dompet Dhuafa prioritizes regions with limited access to animal protein, including:

  • Rural villages
  • Orphanages
  • Islamic boarding schools
  • Refugee and disaster-impacted communities

This approach ensures that the spiritual and nutritional values of the Qurban reach those who need them most, many of whom may only consume meat during this sacred time of year.

Tebar Hewan Kurban is more than a seasonal campaign; it’s a movement of compassion, accountability, and community development. Through rigorous livestock standards, ethical sourcing, and equitable distribution, Dompet Dhuafa ensures that your Qurban fulfills its highest purpose: drawing closer to God while lifting those most in need.

If you’re considering giving your Qurban this year, let it be with intention and impact.
