A Disaster That Disrupted Thousands of Lives
The floods and landslides that struck South Tapanuli caused widespread destruction, washing away homes and forcing residents to flee their villages. Beyond the physical damage, the disaster left many families facing fear, uncertainty, and loss of security.
According to data from the South Tapanuli Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), 4,220 people were affected, with 4,192 individuals (1,073 households) currently living in centralized evacuation shelters. Others have sought refuge independently in safer locations. Many residents remain unable to return home as their former neighborhoods are now considered unsafe due to proximity to rivers, unstable hillsides, and cracked land prone to further landslides.
Continued Humanitarian Support from Dompet Dhuafa USA
This latest intervention marks the second phase of humanitarian assistance from Dompet Dhuafa USA. In the initial emergency response, Dompet Dhuafa USA provided food packages and basic necessities to help affected families meet their most urgent daily needs.
As the situation moved into the early recovery phase, Dompet Dhuafa USA reaffirmed its commitment by allocating IDR 30,000,000 for follow-up assistance. This second phase focuses on programs designed to support both physical recovery and psychosocial well-being, ensuring that aid extends beyond short-term relief.
Temporary Shelters: Restoring Safety and Dignity
One of the key initiatives in this phase is the construction of temporary housing units. In Tolang Jae Village, Sayur Matinggi District, Dompet Dhuafa built four temporary shelters for families whose homes were completely swept away by flash floods.
Prior to receiving this support, affected families were forced to stay with relatives due to the loss of their homes. These temporary shelters not only provide a safe place to live, but also help restore dignity and stability as families begin rebuilding their lives.
Trauma Healing: Addressing Invisible Wounds
Recognizing that disasters also leave deep psychological impacts; particularly on children, Dompet Dhuafa organized trauma healing activities on December 25 and 29, 2025, in Tolang Jae Village, Tolang Julu Village (Sayur Matinggi District), and Mabang Village (Muara Batang Toru District).
These activities included the distribution of school supply packages, nutritious supplementary food, storytelling, games, and group activities designed to help children feel safe, supported, and hopeful once again. In Mabang Village, additional assistance was provided in the form of food staples, kitchen utensils, and prayer mats for the local mosque, addressing both daily and spiritual needs of the community.
Isra Mi’raj: Faith Reflected Through Action
Isra Mi’raj teaches that worship is not limited to personal rituals, but must also be manifested through care for others. The command to establish prayer, received during Isra Mi’raj, carries values of discipline, empathy, and social responsibility.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
