While families across the United States enjoy summer vacations, camps, and community service, millions of orphaned children in Indonesia face a starkly different reality. Lacking the most basic needs like; parental support, educational resources, and emotional security. Their summer is not a season of growth, but of quiet struggle.
As the world takes a break, we’re faced with an urgent and compassionate question: Who takes care of the children left behind?
Two Summers, Two Worlds: A Tale of Contrast
- In USA, summer is filled with enriching experiences; youth development programs, family travel, summer camps, and volunteer work. These activities are designed to build confidence, strengthen community ties, and support personal growth.
- In Indonesia, however, around 4.4 million orphaned and vulnerable children navigate the same season without structure or support. Many reside in over 6,000 orphanages, with nearly 500,000 of them receiving care that often falls short, especially during school breaks, when resources and attention are scarce.
By highlighting these two contrasting experiences, we’re reminded that opportunity isn’t universal, but our response can be.

Gift for Orphans
Every Ramadan, we work with local partners in Indonesia to bring joy to orphaned children. They’re invited on special outings to shop for school supplies, play, and receive meaningful gifts. More than a celebration, this initiative helps restore dignity and hope during Eid.
On March 29, 2025, in collaboration with Yayasan Sumberdaya Masyarakat Indonesia (YSMI), we distributed 110 Eid Gift Baskets to orphans in Jakarta. Each one included new clothes, prayer mats, sarongs, and mukena, ensuring children could celebrate Eid with both joy and spiritual pride.
Why It Matters
